About The Hair Expert

Founded by Jack Martin to fix a simple problem: most beauty reviews are written by the people selling the product.

Jack Martin has worked in the American hair industry for close to thirty years, first behind the chair as a working stylist, later training other stylists on technique and product, and eventually consulting for salons on everything from color menus to the tools they stock at the front desk. The Hair Expert grew directly out of that career, not out of a single bad shopping experience.

After three decades of watching which tools actually survive daily use in a working salon versus which ones just photograph well, Jack wanted a place to put that judgment in writing, without a brand paying for the privilege of a good score. That became The Hair Expert: a blog about hair tools, styling, skincare, and makeup, built around one rule that shapes everything else we do. Nobody can pay for a good review here, not with money, not with free products, not with access. If something doesn’t work, we say it doesn’t work.

What we actually do

We write guides, run interviews with stylists and dermatologists, and cover the brands shaping the industry. What’s different is the Hair Expert Award: a scored, independently tested seal that only goes to products our panel would actually recommend, bought at retail price, tested blind, never sponsored.

Who’s behind it

Jack Martin leads the site day to day and still weighs in on how the testing panel is scored. Editorial coverage comes from a small team including Ava Bennett, Maya Torres, and a rotating group of contributors credited as the Editorial Team. We’re still a small operation, and we like it that way. It’s easier to stay honest when there’s no large advertising department to keep happy.
